Mavik

Generic name: Trandolapril

Mavik is in a family of drugs known as ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitors. It works by preventing a chemical in your blood called angiotensin I from converting into a more potent form that increases salt and water retention in your body. ACE inhibitors also expand your blood vessels, further reducing blood pressure. Mavik is an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor.

Mavik Dosage

For treatment of high blood pressure, the recommended adult starting dose is 1 mg once daily with increases in dose every two to four weeks until blood pressure is controlled. The maximum recommended dose is 4 mg once daily.

After a heart attack, the recommended starting dose is 1 mg once daily starting no earlier than the third day after the heart attack has taken place. After two days, the recommended dose is increased to 2 mg once daily and after one month, the recommended dose is increased to 4 mg once daily if the medication is tolerated.

Trandolapril may be taken with or without food.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones given here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.

It is very important that this medication be taken on a regular schedule as prescribed by the doctor. If you miss a dose of this medication, take it as soon as you remember it. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and carry on with your regular schedule. Do not double doses.

Uses of Mavik

  • It is used to treat high blood pressure.
  • This medication is also used to improve survival after an acute heart attack and with other drugs (e.g., "water pills"/diuretics, digoxin) to treat
  • Mavik may be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Side Effects of Mavik

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Mavik. Side effects may include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • anxiety
  • bloating
  • chest pain
  • constipation
  • cough
  • cramps
  • decreased sex drive
  • diarrhea
  • difficult or labored breathing
  • dizziness
  • drowsiness

Warnings and precautions before taking Mavik:

  • If you develop signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat and difficulty swallowing (or swelling of the arms and legs), you should stop taking Mavik and contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you have congestive heart failure, your blood pressure may drop sharply after the first few doses of Mavik and you may feel light-headed for a time. Your doctor should monitor you closely when you start taking Mavik and when your dosage is increased.
  • High doses of diuretics combined with Mavik may cause excessively low blood pressure. Your doctor may need to reduce your diuretic dose to avoid this problem.
  • Dehydration may cause a drop in blood pressure. If you do not drink enough water, perspire a lot, or suffer vomiting or diarrhea, notify your doctor immediately.

Drug Interaction :- If Mavik is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Mavik with the following:

  • Diuretics such as HydroDIURIL
  • Diuretics that spare the body's potassium, such as Aldactone, Dyazide, and Moduretic
  • Lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid)
  • Potassium preparations such as Micro-K and Slow-K
Overdose

Any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. The most likely effects of a Mavik overdose are light-headedness or dizziness due to a sudden drop in blood pressure. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately.
