Generic Name: Aripiprazole

Abilify (generic name aripiprazole) is an antipsychotic sometimes prescribed to alleviate psychotic features such as paranoia and hallucinations sometimes associated with extreme mood swings in those with bipolar disorder (manic depression). Abilify Dosage

Take Abilify exactly as directed by your doctor. It is usually taken once a day. The usual dose is 10 or 15 milligrams once a day. After a period of two weeks, your doctor may elect to increase your dosage.

Uses of Abilify

  • Abilify is an antipsychotic medication. It works by changing the actions of chemicals in the brain.
  • Abilify is used to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia.

Side Effects of Abilify

Some common side effects with Abilify include:

  • weakness 
  • nausea 
  • vomiting 
  • constipation 
  • anxiety 
  • problems sleeping 
  • lightheadedness (dizziness) 
  • sleepiness 
  • restlessness 
  • rash

Warnings and precautions before taking Abilify:

  • This medicine may reduce your ability to drive or operate machinery safely. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medicine affects you and you are sure it won't affect your performance.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Abilify.
  • This medicine is not recommended for elderly people with psychosis associated with dementia, eg Alzheimer's disease, as it may increase the risk of stroke or death in this group of people

Drug Interaction :- The doctor will need to reduce the dosage of Abilify when you take the following additional drugs:

  • Fluoxetine (Prozac)
  • Ketoconazole (Nizoral)
  • Paroxetine (Paxil)
  • Quinidine (Quinidex)
Overdose
  • Seek emergency medical attention if an overdose is suspected.
  • Symptoms of a Abilify overdose include drowsiness and vomiting.
