Daypro - Uses & Side Effects

Generic name: Oxaprozin

Daypro is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug used to relieve the inflammation, swelling, stiffness, and joint pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis (the most common kind of arthritis). Like other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, it reduces swelling and inflammation as well as alleviating pain.

Daypro Dosage

  • Your doctor will adjust the dose based on your needs.
  • The usual daily dose is 1200 milligrams (two 600-milligram caplets) once a day.
  • Take with or without food. Take with food if this medicine causes an upset stomach.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.

Uses of Daypro

  • Oxaprozin is used to reduce pain, swelling, and joint stiffness from arthritis. This medication is known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
  • Daypro is a pain reliever used to treat osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Side Effects of Daypro

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can decide if it is safe for you to continue taking Daypro. Side effects may include:

  • Constipation, indigestion, nausea, rash
  • Stomach bleeding or ulceration. Watch stools for dark, tarry black color. Talk with healthcare provider.
  • Belly pain, heartburn, cramps, diarrhea, gas.

Warnings and precautions before taking Daypro:

  • Use Daypro with caution if you have kidney or liver disease.
  • Do not take aspirin or any other anti-inflammatory medications while taking Daypro, unless your doctor tells you to do so.
  • Daypro can increase water retention. Use with caution if you have heart disease or high blood pressure.
  • Use caution if you have high blood pressure. Your blood pressure may increase. Talk with healthcare provider.
  • Daypro can prolong bleeding time. If you are taking a blood-thinning medication, use Daypro with caution.
  • This medication should not be used if you have certain medical conditions. Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: aspirin-sensitive asthma (a history of worsening breathing with runny/stuffy nose after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs), recent heart bypass surgery (CABG).
  • Tell healthcare provider if you are breast-feeding.

Drug Interaction :- If you take Daypro with certain other drugs, the effects of either medication could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Daypro with the following medications:

  • Aspirin
  • Beta-blocking blood pressure medications such as Inderal and Tenormin
  • Blood thinners such as Coumadin
  • Digitalis and digoxin (Lanoxin)
  • Diuretics such as Lasix and Midamor
  • Lithium (Lithonate)
Overdose

If you take too much of any medication, it can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms of Daypro overdose may include:

  • Coma, drowsiness, fatigue, nausea, pain in the stomach, stomach and intestinal bleeding, vomiting
  • Acute kidney failure, high blood pressure, and a slowdown in breathing have occurred rarely.
