Lac-Hydrin

Generic name: Ammonium Lactate

Lac-Hydrin is used in the treatment of dry, scaly skin, including the genetic condition called ichthyosis vulgaris. Available in cream and lotion form, the drug moisturizes the skin and breaks up the scales. Lactic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid. It is a normal constituent of tissues and blood.

Lac-Hydrin Dosage

  • Doctors usually recommend rubbing Lac-Hydrin into the affected areas twice a day.

Uses of Lac-Hydrin

  • This medication is used to treat dry, itchy, or scaly skin conditions (e.g., xerosis, ichthyosis). It works by increasing the skin's natural moisture.

Side Effects of Lac-Hydrin

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Lac-Hydrin. Side effects may include:

  • Burning
  • dryness
  • eczema
  • irritation
  • itching
  • peeling
  • rash
  • skin discoloration

Warnings and precautions before taking Lac-Hydrin:

  • Use Lac-Hydrin only on the skin. Avoid contact with eyes, lips, or mucous membranes.
  • If the skin condition worsens, stop using Lac-Hydrin immediately and call your doctor.
  • Lac-Hydrin may cause stinging and burning when applied to raw or broken skin. Due to the possibility of irritation, use caution when you apply it to the face.
  • For external use only. Stinging or burning may occur when applied to skin with fis-sures, erosions or that is otherwise abraded (for example, after shaving the legs).
  • This medication may make you more sensitive to the sun. Avoid sun exposure, use a sunscreen, and wear protective clothing on the areas of skin treated with this drug.
  • This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
  • For external use only. Stinging or burning may occur when applied to skin with fis-sures, erosions or that is otherwise abraded (for example, after shaving the legs).
  • Caution is advised when used on the face because of the potential for irritation. The potential for post-inflammatory hypo- or hyperpigmentation has not been studied.

Drug Interaction :- Avoid the use of other topical medications at the same time as ammonium lactate unless your doctor approves. Other skin medications may affect the absorption or effectiveness of ammonium lactate.

Overdose

Lac-Hydrin is relatively non-toxic and an overdose is unlikely. Nevertheless, if you suspect a problem, don't hesitate to check with your doctor.
