Benzaclin Gel - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin topical (BEN zoyl per OX ide and clin da MYE sin)
Brand Names: Benzaclin, DUAC

Benzaclin is an acne treatment. Both its ingredients--the antibiotic clindamycin and the antibacterial agent benzoyl peroxide--attack the bacteria that help cause acne. Benzaclin is a drug typically prescribed to people suffering from acne vulgaris. Benzoyl peroxide has an antibacterial effect. It also has a mild drying effect that allows excess oil and dirt to be washed away.

Benzaclin Dosage

  • BenzaClin Topical Gel should be applied twice daily, morning and evening, or as directed by a physician, to affected areas after the skin is gently washed, rinsed with warm water and patted dry.

Uses of Benzaclin

  • This combination medication is used to treat acne. It works by treating the bacterial infection that causes acne.
  • This combination medication is used to treat a certain type of acne (inflammatory acne vulgaris). It helps to decrease the number of acne pimples. Clindamycin is an antibiotic that stops the growth of acne-causing bacteria. Benzoyl peroxide can also stop the growth of bacteria as well as reduce oil production in the skin, which helps keep your pores open.

Side Effects of Benzaclin

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue using BenzaClin. Side effects may include:

  • Dry skin, skin irritation
  • Itching, peeling, redness, sunburn

Warnings and precautions before taking Benzaclin:

  • BenzaClin gel is for external use only. Avoid contact with your eyes, nose, mouth, and all mucous membranes.
  • BenzaClin can cause skin irritation, especially if it is used with other skin treatments that are abrasive or cause peeling. Do not combine BenzaClin with other treatments unless directed by your doctor. If your skin becomes severely irritated, stop using BenzaClin and call your doctor.
  • As you use this antibiotic, organisms that are resistant to it may start to grow. If this occurs, your doctor will have you stop using BenzaClin.

Drug Interaction :-

  • Do not use Benzaclin with medications containing erythromycin (E.E.S., Eryc, PCE, others).
  • If you develop diarrhea while taking Benzaclin, check with your doctor before taking an antidiarrhea medication. Some can make your diarrhea worse. For instance, you should avoid the commonly used drugs that slow movement through the intestinal tract, such as Lomotil or products containing paregoric.
Overdose

A massive overdose of Benzaclin is unlikely. However, any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical help immediately.
